What would happen if we all did one thing for the earth?
Posted On 04/04/2008 22:53:22 by momof1

Something really made me think today of what the world will be like in twenty years from now when our babies are all grown up.

I do think the world is changing!!! And it would make a difference if we all went green in some way or another; if we did just one thing. In todays society measures are being taken to become more ecofriendly, but how many of us recycle, or by eco friendly products??? When I lived in San Francisco, I would recycle almost everything. But when I moved to the desert it's harder to recycle because they don't have the resources they do up there. So I've fizzled on my recycling habits.

How many of us run the water when we are brushing our teeth or washing dishes. When grocery shopping, how many bags do they give you. They bag two things in one bag and you end up with 10!! And I heard they don't break down very well in the landfills. Especially with so many diapers we use!

I have been trying to use old rags that I wash instead of paper towels to clean up spills. Yes! I figure it would save me some money and it also saves our trees/enviroment too. However, a very hard habit for me to break because I find papertowels very convenient.

Their is a new line of cleaning products called "Green Works" which supposedly works great, smells good, and is good for the enviornment! I will try them!

This is just some food for thought!

Would like to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Well I am in the process of educating the second graders at my school about helping the Earth.  The sooner we get them on board the better.  We are going to be putting on a program with songs and a powerpoint that will hopefully educate all of the parents in the audience about the importance of recycling, as well as conserving.  Wish me luck and I will keep you posted.

I have a great suggestion to help save the planet-Breastfeed!! This would save on all the ABM (Artifical Baby Milk) cans in the landfill and save water being used to wash bottles.
I myself have 2 trash cans in the house; 1 for trash and the other for anything that can be recycled. I collect the cans, bottles and plastic that can be recycled for money in the garage. I drive my family and coworkers crazy with my collecting of plastic, glass and aluminum. When I go for walks I collect all the disgarded items with a bag I bring along. I have a bag for collecting in my car, my work van and next to my desk. At soccer games I collect; I have even been known to spot items while driving on the side of the road; however I would cause my family too much embarrassment if I stopped. I HATE litterbugs!!  It is really scary to think what the planet will look like for our kids if people continue to throwing everything and anything out their window. I have even said things to people I have seen throw trash anywhere other than a trashcan. Don't be litterbugs!!

Good suggestion.  Did you know that plastic grocery store bags are being referred to as the "Urban Tumbleweed" because they are literally loose all over the country.  How scarry is that?

Well I think you are off to a good start.  I try to use rags instead of paper towels, but I seem to gravitate towards paper because of convenience.  They are always right there in front of me, so it seems to be much easier.  I know, thats not a very good excuse, but its the truth.  I recycle everything that can be recycled--just throw it all in the grey container.  I do feel bad about the bags and bags of dirty diapers I throw away each week--how much more eco-friendly would cloth diapers be??  Again, its all about convenience this day and age I suppose--its about 4 times less work to just toss the disposible away.  Although my parents used cloth, so why couldn't I?  Not to mention they have come a long way since the old safety pin method!

Yes, it does enter my mind to try and conserve resources--but I seem to do what's easier which is most often the least ecofriendly.  But I will try and change those bad habits like leaving the water running and work on reusing the plastic grocery bags--all 10 of them!  Thanks for the inspiration!
