Launch A Social Networking Site
By Stella Inger
KPSP Local 2 News
Many moms are starting up innovative businesses to strike a better balance between work and family . These women are called "mompreneurs."
Mompreneurs are taking their ideas to a new level and they're cashing in. With a bright idea and a little bit of luck, more moms are living their visions and creating their own businesses.
It's an idea that many moms may have thought about, but these three moms built a business out of it- a social networking web site just for moms. Kristine Westlake , July Kauffman and Tanya Huckfeldt decided to jump on it after being there for each other during their pregnancies.
"We were talking about it one day and we thought gosh this been so special to us the support of other women. We decided we'd really like to extend this other moms," said Westlake.
"It's like a momspace . You get to go on and you get to blog , get to join groups, ask other moms to be your friend that have same interests, " said Kauffman.
And that's how " Itsamomthing.com " was born. These mompreneurs came up with an idea that provides a needed service to other moms. The web site was launched less than a year ago , and these moms say they're getting about a million hits a month and have 3,000 subscribers.
"Obviously there's a huge need for this. And what started out as our little pregnant group has gone nationwide," said westlake.
Kristen, Julie and Tanya are among a growing number of mompreneurs - women who are juggling, creating, and owning their own businesses while raising families. As evidence of the growing trend , just surf the web and see the numerous websites dedicated to mompreneurs. There's even a magazine devoted to them.
According to "Score" , a web site that provides information to small businesses, the number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. has doubled from 20 years ago. Mompreneurs are turning their passions into money makers.
"I think moms are the most creative people ever. No other person can multi-task like a mom. They're so creative with what they do everyday," said Wstlake.
"We all three are very fortunate to be able to have started this. And as it grows we have the ability to stay at home and raise our children and work from home," said Huckfeldt.
But living their dream is no easy task. Each of these mompreneurs say they've never worked so hard in their lives. Although they all work from home, kristen has four kids, while her two partners each have one child. They spend the day with their children, but when the sun sets it's time to get to work.
" I work from 8 pm to 1 am. Some night I don't get any sleep. I'll go to bed at 1 a.m. After work and then the baby gets up and starts crying. Sometimes it's difficult , but all worthwhile," said Westlake.
So what does it take to start your own business? There's a lot more to it than an idea and hard work. Tune in to KPSP Local 2 News on Tuesday at 6:45 a.m. to find out what you need to know to launch your own business.

Plastic Containers, Plastic Baby Bottles & Risks
by Stella Inger
KPSP Local 2 News, Palm Desert, California
September 2008
There's a new study out questioning a chemical most commonly found in plastic, including baby bottles. And researchers are saying that the chemical known as BPA can make you sick.
In the past, researchers have conducted studies on BPA, but for the first time, a large-population based study has linked the chemical to heart problems and diabetes.
BPA is used in practically everything. About 7 billion pounds of the chemical are produced worldwide each year. And studies by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have found that 93-percent of Americans have detectable levels of BPA in their urine.
Although the FDA has deemed the chemical safe and is continuing it's review, scientists say babies are especially at risk when their baby bottles are washed in hot water or heated in the microwave. That's when leaching of BPA occurs. The same applies to microwavable containers when their heated.
Kristen Westlake is a Bermuda Dunes resident and a mother of four. She says the new study scares her.
"It's really terrifying to think that we could actually be poising our children and not even know it," said Westlake.
The question many are asking is how can you tell if a plastic item contains BPA? Researchers say there is one thing you can do and that is avoid plastic containers imprinted with the recycling number '7,' as many of those contain BPA.
And while there is some disagreement over the potential risk of BPA some manufacturers have begun making products without it. And Westlake has made the choice to go BPA-free
"I just do everything that I can with all of the information that I'm given to make the right choice for my family, " said Westlake.
Westlake says if you're a mom living in the valley who needs more information about BPA you can contact her at www.itsamomthing.com. Westlake is one of three women who founded a new social networking community for moms to discuss anything and everything on their minds.
